Bauhaus and Beyond

animation – bauhaus and beyond

idea

The Idea behind our animation for the topic of "Bauhaus & Beyond“ wasn’t the historical background of the design schools. Instead, we wanted to illustrate the mental picture or the perception of the designers and their work.

Concept

To show the difference between the Bauhaus and the School of Design Ulm, we divided the animation into two parts. For each part of the animation we took a quotation, one from Wassily Kandinsky for the Bauhaus („There is no must in art because art ist free.“) and one from Hans Gugelot for the HfG („The designer is a constructor who inculudes the human being as part of a system.“). For the introduction, we used the quotation from Kandinsky to show the freedom of art that was taught at the Bauhaus. Also, the Bauhaus part of the animation was in slower motion, with objects moving around freely and appearing in the three basic colors -- blue, red and yellow. In contrast, for the part on the School of Design Ulm, we accelerated it a little bit, to show the mass production side of the HfG. The best known product invented in the School of Design Ulm is the "Ulmer Hocker“ which we used for the second part. We ended the animation with the quotation from Gugelot: "The designer is a constructor who includes the human being as a part of a system."

Message

The message behind this animation was to express the different feeling and ideas behind the two Design Schools among their professors and students.
