Team 2

What is normal?

Idea

While exploring the city of Yogyakarta in Indonesia together as a team, we noticed that there is clearly a difference in perception of various urban signs and symbols between the Indonesian and German students. The Germans were often surprised or in some situations even shocked, whereas the Indonesian students perceived them as a normal part of their everyday life.

Message

Our animation is meant to show the viewer that what you call normal is based on your perspective. That is why it is important to get to know different cultures and learn about their different ways of perception. That is one of the reasons why this workshop was such a unique and valuable experience for our team.

Concept

Based on those impressions, we planned to show a German and an Indonesian girl walking through Yogyakarta. Along their way, they are confronted by four different signs or symbols which include a distorted sign, a traffic jam, loud noises and overwhelming signs and colors, and last but not least a sleeping becak driver. They express their thoughts and thereby their different perceptions in their conversation. As an introduction, the map of Yogyakarta is displayed, so that the viewer gets to know the setting of the scene.
For the illustrations, we chose a typical style of flat design that is clear, functional and comprehensive. A broad color palette reflects the colorful city of Yogyakarta. The typographical elements used are set in Montserrat, a simplified and modern font that matches the style of the animation. For sound, we used, beside the girls's dialogue, traffic sounds and joyful background music.
