Dialog of Cultures

Idea

The idea was to show the different perceptions of the different cultures by concentrating on these topics: Food, Bathroom, Traffic, Work, Free Time and Religion. We started with one topic after the other and just drew what came to our mind. By going through topic after topic we were able to see the differences and similarities, although the core meaning was the same. They ranged from small things, such as using a knife and fork in Germany and using a spoon and a fork in Indonesia, all the way to Western toilets and squat toilets.

Message

The message is to accept our differences and embrace them by learning from each other. Even though we have many differences, we also have many similarities and respect for the other culture. By doing so and acknowledging ourselves as individual people, we can all be friends.

Concept

We wanted to show different perceptions of each topic in comparison to one another, so the best way to do that was by animation. In the animation, two girls are walking through a city and encounter different signs or symbols, such as restaurant signs or the toilet symbol. Thought bubbles come up at each stop from both of them depicting their thoughts with little symbols. In the end, both of them walk away as friends, to show that the differences are no obstacles for friendship, as we could experience ourselves while working together. The animation is mostly digitally drawn and minimalistically animated. The style is cartoonish with bright colors and thick black outlines to give an overall happy feeling to it.
